{"id":460,"date":"2013-08-27T21:08:04","date_gmt":"2013-08-27T21:08:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ramblingrunnergirl.com\/?p=460"},"modified":"2013-08-27T21:49:29","modified_gmt":"2013-08-27T21:49:29","slug":"460","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.ramblingrunnergirl.com\/?p=460","title":{"rendered":"RRG&#8217;s Rebuttal to &#8220;Runners Are Jerks&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>You may have seen the article 13 Reasons Every Runner is a Jerk written by Guy Speed Editors.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/guyspeed.com\/runners-are-jerks\/\">http:\/\/guyspeed.com\/runners-are-jerks\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Whether you are a runner or not, it\u2019s mildly amusing to think that someone could be so bitter about something as harmless as running.\u00a0 He even concludes his opening remarks stating that runners won\u2019t be offended by this because we\u2019re too busy running to read it.\u00a0 This is, obviously, untrue.\u00a0 The lack of time to read it part, that is.\u00a0 As far as being offended?\u00a0 Well, it\u2019s so ridiculous, it\u2019s basically impossible to take any of it seriously.\u00a0 In fact, I\u2019m not writing my rebuttal to be defensive, I am merely writing it because my friend and fellow running jerk, Steve DeFriese, suggested that\u00a0it would be comical to respond to such nonsense.\u00a0 And so, without further adieu\u2026<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">13 Reasons Every Runner is a Jerk by Guy Speed Editors<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Running has countless benefits \u2014 it\u2019s good for your health, your heart, your stress levels and might even increase your lifespan. Too bad almost every runner is a massive jerk.<\/p>\n<p>An estimated 7 million people participate in some form of running for exercise each year, which means, we\u2019re surrounded by at least 7 million aholes who make the sport seem so damn obnoxious. That\u2019s probably because it is obnoxious.<\/p>\n<p>Here are thirteen reasons most runners are jerks. Don\u2019t worry, they won\u2019t be offended, they are out running and won\u2019t have time to read this article.<\/p>\n<p><i>RRG:\u00a0 Ok, First of all, EVERY runner is a jerk?\u00a0 Do you KNOW every runner?\u00a0 Doubtful.\u00a0 So it is really impossible to conclude this. Secondly, you go on to say \u201calmost every runner\u201d and \u201cmost runners\u201d.\u00a0 So which is it?\u00a0 All of us?\u00a0 Most of us? Some of us?\u00a0 I think it\u2019s fair to say that, yes, some runners are jerks.\u00a0 Just like some Serial killers are jerks, some grocery store clerks are jerks, some professional golfers are jerks.\u00a0 Jerks come in all packages, and some hide behind the keyboard of a laptop and post nonsensical drivel declaring entire groups of people to be this or that and creating stereotypes.\u00a0 Sillyness.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>We live in a society where we\u00a0are constantly fighting\u00a0to break down the hate and hostility against various groups of people (different ethnicities, homosexuals, etc).\u00a0 Have we really resorted to this?\u00a0 C\u2019mon.\u00a0 Let\u2019s get real.\u00a0 Try to be a little more accepting of people\u2019s differences and stop generalizing, would you? \u00a0Typically fear is what leads to hate.\u00a0 Are you afraid of runners or are you just afraid to run?<\/i><\/p>\n<p>1. They run through and around traffic and really don\u2019t care about the rules of the road.<\/p>\n<p><i>RRG: Occasionally this is true.\u00a0 Although I don\u2019t recommend it.\u00a0 As a social run leader, I always make an announcement at the beginning of each run to practice safety when crossing a main thoroughfare.\u00a0 I suggest headlamps if it\u2019s dark and reflectivity is a requirement.\u00a0 We know that cars are bigger than we are, but let us not forget that \u201cPedestrians have the right of way\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n<p>2.\u00a0 They brag about losing toenails and bloody nipples are acceptable.<\/p>\n<p><i>RRG: \u00a0\u00a0Losing a toenail is sort of like a rite of passage for marathoners.\u00a0 Although, if you\u2019re wearing the correct shoe in the correct size, the likelihood of losing a toenail should be considerably less.\u00a0 And Bloody nipples are never acceptable.\u00a0 Period.\u00a0 That\u2019s why we recommend synthetic clothing and products like Run Guard (anti-chafe) and Nipguards.\u00a0\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n<p>3.\u00a0 Running on crowded sidewalks is common as long as you don\u2019t get in the way with your \u201cwalking\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><i>RRG: \u00a0\u00a0Running on crowded sidewalks isn\u2019t particularly fun, but I suppose it beats the alternative of running \u201cthrough and around traffic\u201d.\u00a0 People walk all different paces on the sidewalk, why should our running be any different?\u00a0\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n<p>4.\u00a0 Runners love to sticker brag how far they\u2019ve run\u2026ironically stuck to the back of their cars.<\/p>\n<p><i>RRG:\u00a0 Yes, we do this.\u00a0 And some of us take it a step farther.\u00a0 I have 26.2 tattooed on my right ankle and I have countless jerk friends who have other running related ink.\u00a0 Would you rather read a bumper sticker about my honor student?\u00a0 Or perhaps you would rather see my family depicted on my back window, including my 17 cats.\u00a0 Whatever, it\u2019s my car. \u00a0I can put anything on it that I want.\u00a0 That might be an indication of my ego, but it doesn\u2019t make me a jerk.\u00a0\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n<p>5.\u00a0 The entire sport is based on being selfish and alone.<\/p>\n<p><i>RRG:\u00a0 How do you figure?\u00a0 Sometimes people run for solitude, myself included.But lots of people run with social clubs or training teams.\u00a0 Many people have a \u201crunning buddy\u201d or a training partner.\u00a0 Races are all about camaraderie.\u00a0 Some races are team events or relays.\u00a0 So to say that the entire sport is based on \u201cbeing selfish and alone\u201d, is completely inaccurate.\u00a0 Running is based on pushing ourselves to be stronger, better people.\u00a0 The endorphin high we get from running makes us happier, too.\u00a0 Perhaps you need a few more endorphins in your life.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>6.\u00a0 When a race is over, every runner gets a medal.\u00a0 Medals.\u00a0 For everyone.\u00a0 Grown people with medals.<\/p>\n<p><i>RRG: \u00a0Maybe if you had a medal or two of your own, you wouldn\u2019t be so bitter.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>7.\u00a0 Not every runner can pull off running shorts, but EVERY runner tries.<\/p>\n<p><i>RRG:\u00a0 Actually, not EVERY runner tries to pull off running shorts.\u00a0 Some people are very self-conscious about running shorts, so they prefer running skirts or tights.\u00a0 I personally love Nike capris, but when its 95 degrees out, with 90% humidity, I prefer not to melt, so I wear shorts.\u00a0 Besides, at least the people who can\u2019t pull them off are out there making an effort to do something about their lifestyle.\u00a0 Stop being so judgmental about their apparel choices.\u00a0 If you want to do that, go hang out at Walmart.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>8. The sport is so boring they need gimmicks to make it entertaining.<\/p>\n<p><i>RRG:\u00a0 I can honestly say I have never participated in a gimmick run.\u00a0 I haven\u2019t done a color run or a glow run or a zombie run, not even a mud run.\u00a0 I have only participated in running races, and more recently triathlons, and I do it because to me, it\u2019s fun.\u00a0 So honestly, I can\u2019t really speak to this.\u00a0 But I will say that if people need something gimmicky to make exercising more fun, then bring on the gimmicks.\u00a0 We live in America where obesity is out of control, so let\u2019s give people every reason to get out an exercise.\u00a0 And if you think running is boring, well, you are entitled to that opinion.\u00a0 I choose to believe otherwise.\u00a0 And that doesn\u2019t make me a jerk.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>9.\u00a0 Don\u2019t plan on runners doing anything on a weekend, they\u2019ve got a race (or need to train for one)<\/p>\n<p><i>RRG:\u00a0 It\u2019s true we make our plans around our races and our long training runs.\u00a0 But how does that affect you?\u00a0 Even so, have you ever been to a post race party?\u00a0 Runners know how to have a good time.\u00a0 We train hard, we race hard, and then we play hard.\u00a0 End of story.\u00a0\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n<p>10.\u00a0 Runners think other people care about their times.\u00a0 Even other people interested in running don\u2019t care about their times.<\/p>\n<p><i>RRG: \u00a0If you aren\u2019t interested in hearing about our times, just say so.\u00a0 We do tend to get over excited about the numbers, but nobody said you had to listen to us.\u00a0\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n<p>11.\u00a0 They invite people to watch them run.<\/p>\n<p><i>RRG:\u00a0 You are completely contradicting yourself here.\u00a0 In #5 you said the sport is based on being selfish and alone.\u00a0 If we really wanted to be alone, would we invite you to come out and celebrate with us?\u00a0 Perhaps we are trying to include you and welcome you into our club. Ever think about that?<\/i><\/p>\n<p>12.\u00a0 Races shut down major streets for hours, but it\u2019s cool, no one else was going anywhere today.<\/p>\n<p><i>RRG:\u00a0 Umm, yeah, ya got me on this one.\u00a0 It\u2019s true, our races can be an inconvenience to travelers.\u00a0 But isn\u2019t it better to have to take a detour because of a race, than to have a highway shut down for months of construction?\u00a0 Or due to a 56 car pile-up resulting in a bunch of casualties?\u00a0 Just sayin\u2026<\/i><\/p>\n<p>13.\u00a0 \u201cDid I mention I went for a run today?\u00a0 How many times?\u00a0 Here\u2019s one more for mention\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p><i>RRG:\u00a0 It\u2019s true.\u00a0 We like to talk about running.\u00a0 Heck, some of us like it so much we start a blog so we can talk about it all the time.\u00a0 And weirdly, people actually read it because they might find it interesting or entertaining.\u00a0 Go figure.\u00a0 But again, just because we\u2019re talking, doesn\u2019t mean you have to listen.\u00a0\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n<p>A Final Note from Rambling Runner Girl:\u00a0 I very highly doubt that any of my comments will change your mind and make you consider befriending me or any of my jerk friends.\u00a0 Look, you don\u2019t have to agree with me and you certainly don\u2019t have to like me.\u00a0 I\u2019m not going to change my opinion about running, just like you probably won\u2019t either.
