{"id":415,"date":"2013-07-24T17:12:12","date_gmt":"2013-07-24T17:12:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ramblingrunnergirl.com\/?p=415"},"modified":"2013-07-24T20:26:22","modified_gmt":"2013-07-24T20:26:22","slug":"racing-racine-a-recap-part-i-getting-to-the-start","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.ramblingrunnergirl.com\/?p=415","title":{"rendered":"Racing Racine: A Recap, Part I: Getting to the Start"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There is a magnet stuck on my fridge at home with a quote from William James.\u00a0 It says, \u201cWhere ever you are it is your friends who make your world.\u201d\u00a0 Last weekend proved that to me once again.<\/p>\n<p>On Friday, after work, I began my solitary road trip to Racine, WI, knowing that I had several friends waiting for me at my destination.\u00a0 But the destination was really just a starting point to our weekend adventure. \u00a0Just before midnight, I pulled into the Racine Marriott parking lot, packed with cars decorated with empty bike racks, where Steve, Nick and Nick\u2019s girlfriend Jenny were all waiting up for me, watching Storage Wars.\u00a0 (Remember a few months ago I shared the text exchange with my anonymous friend \u201cMick\u201d?\u00a0 Well, if you didn\u2019t figure it out then, it was really Nick, and Jenny was the mystery woman) Jenny came along last weekend as moral support, Sherpa, cheerleader and troubleshooter.\u00a0 She has completed not only 70.3, but a full 140.6\u2026Twice!\u00a0 Her expertise and encouragement were priceless.<\/p>\n<p>On Saturday morning, we took our time getting up and had breakfast of omelets and waffles at the Marriott buffet amidst many athletes dressed in technical gear, announcing bragging rights from previous races.\u00a0 Then we made our way to downtown Racine where we would make it official.\u00a0 We checked in, signed waivers, got wristbands, packets and timing chips, freaked out a little and ran into lots of friends including Chad and Tracy, who had an additional surprise\u2026Tracy was sporting a little extra bling on her left ring finger.\u00a0 What a way to make a big weekend even bigger!\u00a0 Congrats guys!<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_420\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ramblingrunnergirl.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/970607_10152504145011531_1745052553_n-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-420\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-420\" alt=\"LJ, Steve, Nick, Chad, Tracy...Ready to Rumble!\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ramblingrunnergirl.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/970607_10152504145011531_1745052553_n-1-300x198.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"198\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.ramblingrunnergirl.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/970607_10152504145011531_1745052553_n-1-300x198.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.ramblingrunnergirl.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/970607_10152504145011531_1745052553_n-1-624x413.jpg 624w, http:\/\/www.ramblingrunnergirl.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/970607_10152504145011531_1745052553_n-1.jpg 960w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-420\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">LJ, Steve, Nick, Chad, Tracy&#8230;Ready to Rumble!<\/p><\/div>\n<p>After check in, we headed over to drop our bikes.\u00a0 Then on to the beach for a practice swim.\u00a0 The boys had me scared to death that I would be running into Icebergs along the course since it was a whopping 55 degrees on Friday and they declared the water was numbing.\u00a0 Fortunately the water had warmed up considerably from the day before. \u00a0I plunged right into the 64 degree water and told them to stop being a bunch of pansies.\u00a0 \u00a0They said, \u201cNo really, it was so much colder yesterday!\u201d Uh-huh, sure.\u00a0 (I actually do believe them, I just like to give them grief) \u00a0The water was smooth, we could see the bottom, sighting was easy, the temp was great, and everything was falling into place.\u00a0 I swam toward Chad, Tracy and Steve out by the buoy.\u00a0 When I popped up, I sprayed Chad and exclaimed loudly, \u201cYeeeah! Lindsey learned how to SWIM!\u201d\u00a0 I was pumped, this was gonna be a good race.\u00a0Nick eventually made his way out to join us in full wetsuit attire.<\/p>\n<p>After lunch of peanut butter sandwiches by the car, we stopped by the Piggly Wiggly to get some supplies and spent the rest of Saturday lounging.\u00a0 We grabbed some take-out pasta, brought it back to the hotel and had dinner on the Marriott patio, which Nick dedicated the \u201cGoat Garden\u201d.\u00a0 Who knew the Marriott had a room just for goats?\u00a0 Oh, wait, that sign says Coat Room\u2026nevermind.\u00a0 We laughed a lot, which broke the tension we were all feeling from the nerves and fear.\u00a0 I fielded many \u201cGood Luck\u201d texts and messages throughout the day, to most of which I responded that I was feeling \u201cnervous and scared and very excited!\u201d\u00a0 A great mix of emotions.<\/p>\n<p>After we did race prep, like putting bib numbers on race belts and stickers on helmets, gathering all our gear, then double and triple checking that we had absolutely everything, we turned in for an early night.\u00a0 But we all had a hard time falling asleep.\u00a0 As we lay there in the dark, I broke the silence after a few minutes, \u201cUmm, I have a dumb question\u2026\u201d\u00a0 I don\u2019t even remember what I asked, probably something about transition.\u00a0 Followed by several more rookie questions.\u00a0 Eventually we all drifted off to sleep and the next thing we knew, at least 3 alarms were beeping, buzzing or singing that it was 4:30am.\u00a0 The excited, nervous chatter started immediately, even though we still didn\u2019t move from the beds.\u00a0 At 4:40am, Jenny exited the bathroom, the only of the 4 of us not racing that day, and found the 3 of us still lying in bed watching infomercials.\u00a0 What\u2019s wrong with this picture?!\u00a0 We made our way out of bed still taking notes on great products like the Winbot, got dressed in racing gear, ate more peanut butter sandwiches, filled water bottles and made our way to the Pathfinder.\u00a0 We drove over to the course, found parking and trekked our stuff to T1 to set up our transition areas.<\/p>\n<p>On the way into the transition area we got our body markings.\u00a0 Lack of coffee caused me to say, \u201cI\u2019m number 316, no, wait, that\u2019s wrong, I\u2019m 613.\u201d Yeah, uh, probably need to get that right. Then she asked my age at the end of the year because that gets written on your calf, to which I replied, \u201cNo fair, I\u2019m an October birthday\u201d.\u00a0 But she assured me it\u2019s an even bigger accomplishment the older you are.\u00a0 So, I said, \u201cOk, if we\u2019re talking accomplishments, then can you also write on there that I\u2019m a single mom of 3?\u201d\u00a0 She laughed and said, \u201cHoney, I\u2019ll write anything you want.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_418\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ramblingrunnergirl.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/1082292_10151726294220306_528980461_o-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-418\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-418\" alt=\"RRG chatting it up with the Transition neighbor\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ramblingrunnergirl.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/1082292_10151726294220306_528980461_o-1-300x219.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"219\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.ramblingrunnergirl.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/1082292_10151726294220306_528980461_o-1-300x219.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.ramblingrunnergirl.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/1082292_10151726294220306_528980461_o-1-1024x748.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.ramblingrunnergirl.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/1082292_10151726294220306_528980461_o-1-624x455.jpg 624w, http:\/\/www.ramblingrunnergirl.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/1082292_10151726294220306_528980461_o-1.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-418\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">RRG chatting it up with the Transition neighbor<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Once inside T1, we saw friends, took pictures, filled tires, generally just tried to keep from freaking out.\u00a0 At 6:30 they closed the transition area and evacuated all athletes.\u00a0 On my way out, I saw Karen; we hugged and freaked out a little.\u00a0 We assured each other we could do this, and then we hugged again.\u00a0 And one more hug for the road before her parting word to me was \u201cOhmmm\u201d. \u00a0Finally we separated, she headed to the start, I headed to the bathroom line.\u00a0 It was long, but it seemed to be moving.\u00a0 Less than an hour until my wave start.\u00a0 Tracy and Chad walked by on their way to the<br \/>\nstart, I said I\u2019d be right behind them.<\/p>\n<p>I got through the line, met back up with Jenny and the boys and we embarked upon the mile walk up the beach to the start line.\u00a0 We looked out at the water and saw that it was considerably more choppy than the day before.\u00a0 Choppy but not as bad as my swim in Lake Michigan the week before.\u00a0 Not yet anyway.\u00a0 My mom called to say good luck, she was on her way to watch me and she hoped to get there before I took off on the bike.\u00a0 Steve guess-timated the bike would take me 3:30-45 (Ha! Boy did I show him!)\u00a0 As we walked up the beach, the waves grew bigger and bigger.\u00a0 I started to second guess my decision to ditch the wetsuit, especially as I saw that I was very possibly the ONLY person in the field of 2200 athletes who was not wearing one.\u00a0 That\u2019s ok; I\u2019ve always been kind of a non-conformist.\u00a0 I got one last hug from Nick, Jenny and Steve, kicked off my flip-flops and made my way through the crowd while the boys began the process of wetsuit robing.\u00a0 Erin found me and we scanned the beach for Tracy, \u201cShe was just right here\u201d, Erin said.\u00a0 Then we heard an announcement for wave 7, women 35-39 to get in line.\u00a0 I bolted and started pushing through the crowd knowing that people were probably wondering why I waited so long.\u00a0 When I arrived at the start line wild-eyed and frantically searching the crowd of yellow swim-capped heads for a familiar face, I couldn\u2019t have been happier to hear Tracy\u2019s voice yelling my name.\u00a0 She said I still had a couple minutes, so I should jump in the water to get acclimated.\u00a0 I pulled my swim cap on, spit into my goggles, and marched out into the waves, aware of all the eyes on me wondering where my wetsuit was.\u00a0 I looked at one guy with his mouth gaping open and said, \u201cYeah, that\u2019s right, I\u2019m that crazy girl.\u201d\u00a0 Then I dove into the water.\u00a0 As I tried to get up to walk back to the shore, the force of the waves knocked me back down.\u00a0 Oh my, this swim is going to be interesting.\u00a0 Little did I know of the challenge I was in for\u2026<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_416\" style=\"width: 178px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ramblingrunnergirl.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/1008213_10151727196895789_446943383_o.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-416\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-416\" alt=\"It's official.  #613 is all checked in.\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ramblingrunnergirl.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/1008213_10151727196895789_446943383_o-168x300.jpg\" width=\"168\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.ramblingrunnergirl.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/1008213_10151727196895789_446943383_o-168x300.jpg 168w, http:\/\/www.ramblingrunnergirl.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/1008213_10151727196895789_446943383_o-575x1024.jpg 575w, http:\/\/www.ramblingrunnergirl.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/1008213_10151727196895789_446943383_o-624x1110.jpg 624w, http:\/\/www.ramblingrunnergirl.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/1008213_10151727196895789_446943383_o.jpg 728w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 168px) 100vw, 168px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-416\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">It&#8217;s official. #613 is all checked in.<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There is a magnet stuck on my fridge at home with a quote from William James.\u00a0 It says, \u201cWhere ever you are it is your friends who make your world.\u201d\u00a0 Last weekend proved that to me once again.
